Grains from Grampa

I love my Grampa Chick. He's full of fun stories and wise words. It is such a blessing to be able to sit and listen to him talk about life past and present. The other day mom and I were doing the dishes and he came up to us with this little saying (which I think he made up himself!):

A man's work is from sun to sun, but a woman's work is never done.

I just thought I'd share that! Enjoy your day!

Thought Provoking

Last week my Bible case broke. Bummer. The good thing, though, is that I had to empty out all of its contents in order to throw it away. In doing so, I discovered some of my church notebooks containing sermon notes dated back to 2004! It was so cool. I got a bit lost in reading through them and I wanted to share a couple of quotes from some of Pat's sermons. I didn't reference them in the notes, so I'm not sure if they are original Pat Denny quotes or if they are the genius of others. Here they are:

We are no better than what the grace of God makes us.

Sin will take you farther than you want to go; keep you longer than you want to stay and cost you more than you want to pay.

Modesty is every man's battle, so it should be every woman's concern.

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed those golden nuggets of wisdom from sermons past. We're headed up to my uncle's camp for the weekend to celebrate my Nana's birthday. Hope you enjoy your weekend!

Tales of the tuckered

Yes. The title says it all. I'm sitting here at a rather late time in the evening (or an extremely early time in the morning- you take your pick!) sipping on some chamomile tea and waiting for exhaustion to completely take over. There are a few things I've learned today: 1. Listen to your mom, even when she is being the Water Nazi,  2. Don't try to watch Jane Austen when you are packing and sick and 3. Ice cream and colds do not go together. Anyway, enough of my silly ramblings.
In a recent sermon, my Pastor confessed that prior to children, he thought he was going to raise the perfect offspring. I laughed out loud when he admitted to this and thought to myself, no way! He didn't really expect that? I mean, there's no perfect person in existance ever, excepting Jesus. People don't really think they'll raise impecable children. Little did I know that I would make the same presumption! In May, a little bundle of joy came into my life- now before you get scared, I'll tell you that this bundle of joy came with fur and four legs. Yep, my little Nettie came to me as a complete suprise and without any preparation on my part. Immediately I set in my mind to be the perfect master and raise... well.... the perfect puppy. Haha! I assumed the same thing! These hopes and dreams were shattered not 24 hours into this adventure upon her first accident on the floor. It was like parenting a toddler! I am constantly wearied by training this cute creature, but at the same time I cannot fathom giving her up. She's taught me a great many things about myself- my sinfulness- than I ever would have found out on my own. But, that's another post for another time.
This summer has been filled with wonderful and fun things, like the baptism of three of my sisters in Christ. It is always so inspiring and strengthening to see a baptism and it makes me wonder what it was like when John the Baptist was making his debut. There is always that verse he spoke that comes to mind when at a baptism, which is completely appropriate for the occasion: speaking of Jesus he said, "He must increase, and I must decrease."
We had family camp as usual and it was a great time of refreshment, fellowship and extreme conviction (I could always dispense with that last one- just kidding!).
I've spent time practicing my harp for a wedding, altering some dresses for another friend's wedding,
babysitting my favorite quartet of boys and going to the beach with them and their super-cool mom!
I've loved getting to know my little nephew "Pip", who is growing cuter and cuter every day.
We were blessed to have a visit from the Johnsons and, as always, we had lots of great quality time together with lots of laughs and lots of good conversation.
I also had the privileged of helping out with SMASH's production of Love's Labour's Lost and enjoyed making new friends as they were a superb group of young adults.

And now the chamomile has relaxed my muscles and my brain is turning to mush. My apologies for what is probably a boring blog post. I will try for a better one next time! Until then, drink your water and eat your veggies!!

Sturdy Women

I've been hearing that description often lately, sturdy woman, and for a very good reason. A sturdy woman is a lady who is not weak or lazy or foolish. She knows her mind, what she believes and why. She is ready to work and doesn't complain. She is prepared to battle against this world's prince of darkness by whatever means God calls her to. She is brave and she is able, but she is not independent of the Lord. She needs the men God has placed in her life and she seeks to encourage and build them up.

Our Pastor has been preaching about this sturdy woman for the past couple of weeks- I've really been enjoying the sermons and I'm glad we get to hear more a third week! But the real reason I've been hearing about this woman is because there is one who exemplifies her in my life.

She is my sister.

She has been ready to be a mom and a wife since she was in her early teens. She knew that was God's high calling for women, so she rose to meet that goal. She is every bit the woman I described in the first paragraph and I am so inspired by her! There are times that I miss her dreadfully, but I know that she is fulfilling her role in God's Kingdom and there is no better place for her (and she's got a super husband, so that is reassuring).

Peter Marshall once wrote to the women of America:

It is a much nobler thing to be a good wife than to be Miss America.
It is a greater achievement to establish a Christian home than it is to produce a second-rate novel, filled with filth.
It is a far, far better thing in the realms of morals to be old-fashioned than to be ultra-modern.
The world has enough women who know how to hold their cocktails, who have lost all their illusions and their faith.
The world has enough women who know how to be smart.
It needs women who are willing to be simple.
The world has enough women who know how to be brilliant.
It needs some who will be brave.
The world has enough woman who are popular.
It needs more who are pure.

I love you Kayla!!

New Life

Early Monday, Kayla's water broke- a month before her due date! So, she and Josiah went to the hospital to see what was going on. After a test, she was admitted into the hospital. They were worried that all her amniotic or ambiotic (I can't remember which is correct or if I'm even spelling either properly) would be gone and the baby would need to come out! So, after a long labor, some inducing and lots of hard contractions.......

....little Marshall Phillip was born on the 13th of May, 2009. Weighing 5 lbs. and 6 oz. and measuring 19 1/2 inches. He's so cute! And we are all estatic!

The proud mommy and daddy and the young uncle- also very excited! He's happy that he has a little boy to play with- albeit it will take a few years!!

Aunties! (we were bummed that Shay couldn't be there!)
God is good and little "Pip," as I shall affectionately call him, is doing well. Please continue to pray that all will go smoothly with nursing and with his little lungs!
I will tell you some more stories another time, but for now all I have to say is that GOD IS AMAZING!

Updates of the doldrums and a few ecstasies

Well, we are now without a computer for an indefinite amount of time, but thankfully I have a generous sister and brother-in-law who live in close proximity to me!! Now for a few updates:
Kayla- the cutie-patootie preggo- is doing very well. Right now she is off with her in-laws on a musical tour of Canada. They are extremely gifted musically and we are all praying that they will have a fruitful tour and God would use them mightily! But I do miss her A LOT!!
Here is a photo of my niece- Natasha Mishayla Amanda Denny! Just kidding, of course. I will be most blessed with whatever gender baby Kayla and Josiah have. I'm too exciting about being an aunt to care about such unimportant details! : ) (but if it's a girl we could use a combination of our names to create a totally new name- like Nashda or Mitada or Amshaysha or Tashayda.... ok, I guess I like the name they picked better!)
With Spring we are outside a ton and enjoying watching the new green life around our house- although we are still unsure of most of the plants and bushes. It's a mystery!!! Ethan and I have started Creation or Nature Journals, which is a really neat way to get natural science in and explore the world that God has created in our area and others.

April, May and June will all be very busy months for us. We'll be outside a lot, getting our veggie garden ready and taking care of the acorns that embed themselves in our lawn in scores everyday!! Our Saturdays are filled with workdays in preparation for camp and church cleanup, volleyball will be starting soon- YAY- and in June there will be babies and recitals, performances and family camp. In May I may (no pun intended) be staying in Poland for a week- it will be jolly good fun!
When I was in high school, I was involved in a thespian group titled "Southern Maine Association of Shakespearean Homeschooler" or SMASH. We did readings of Shakespeare, A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Tempest and a musical- Toad of Toad Hall. Those productions hold some of my fondest memories. I am blessed this year, to be part of the directing team as SMASH performs Love's Labour's Lost. We've had a couple of meetings and I just adore the cast already- they are a super group of kids who love God and want to bring out the virtuous themes and godly lessons in this play to spread the gospel. I'm terribly excited about it!

Anyway, those were some very dull updates in the life of this Chick. Hopefully I'll be able to post a bit more sometime soon. God has been teaching me so much since our computer went caput and I hope to share a bit with you all at some point!
Until then, may God bless you and keep you!
